Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
Rai sank a decisive birdie from around eight foot to seal the win, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion started the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last green.
Playoff Climax
That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more individual. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”

The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his chances of topping the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
