On the eve of his sixth anniversary as manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his longevity in North London is inextricably linked to winning major honors.

A Look Back: The Arteta Era

Arteta was appointed on the 20th of December in 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory a short time later. However, that early success stands as his sole significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” he stated in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “However, it is about today. And many things must occur in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”

He will mark the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the very same club Arsenal played the day after his hiring was confirmed.

Present Challenges

With trailing Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal face being knocked off top spot in the Premier League for the first time. This comes notwithstanding Arteta managing a squad that has been plagued by more than a century of fitness issues since the start of last season.

The manager currently has 18 months to run on the contract he inked in 2024, however, he knows that results must come sooner rather than later.

The Manager's Mandate

The manager expanded, highlighting the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

He stated further, praising the unwavering support from the club's ownership, yet identifying the players' commitment as most crucial. “Ultimately, the critical component are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, willingness to improve and give their all to the team.”

Arsenal faces the weekend fixture coping with yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a muscle problem that is likely to sideline him for a few weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Despite the injury crisis and the intense pressure, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are profoundly distinct from when he began his reign.

The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as evidence of progress. “Examine the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”

In closing, the manager stated, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
