Mikel Arteta remains confident that his side can keep managing with player absences after disclosing that attacker Kai Havertz will not return for a few more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

Havertz has been sidelined since the summer following knee surgery. Originally slated to return sooner, the manager stated the player encountered a problem when advancing his rehabilitation and could not progress “the next phase.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is much more reliable and has greater depth,” stated the manager.

This update leaves a dilemma for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between persisting with Mikel Merino, who found the net playing out of position last weekend, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return off the bench as a substitute. More doubts involve defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Chelsea match. As a result, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in the heart of the defence for the league leaders.

The manager is convinced the significant outlay on reinforcements ahead of this season has left Arsenal in a far better place to navigate such unavailability.

When asked if a larger pool of players was benefiting their league challenge, Arteta was emphatic. “Absolutely, because this season has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now the situation with the backline,” he added.

“History has shown us that we need to utilize players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we want to compete at the highest level. And the case of Mikel Merino.”

Speaking about the setback highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided additional context. “He followed all protocols. He failed to advance to the required step and now it appears like we have solved that issue.”

The manager conveyed his keenness to see him return. “We’re all desperate to have him. Truly, he is a footballer who, for me, I admire greatly for his contributions to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I observe his frustration while sidelined.”
