As Sunbathers Escaped Attack, Popular Picture Captures Rescuer Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, like many neighbors, noticed loud noises echoing across the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks on display told her something was wrong.

Positioned on the street, speaking to a pair who had rushed up the hill soaked, she heard someone moving up behind her. This turned out to be a rescuer, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. It was just him running in the direction that the crowd was trying to flee, while holding that large equipment and barefoot … He’s running towards something that certainly every part of you would signal you to go in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just totally full throttle sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery In the Wake of Tragedy

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many instances of courage in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, officers and ambulance crews caring for dozens of those hurt.

Council Praise

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many permanent lifeguards, remarked that the staff rose to the occasion from the instant the shooting started right into late that evening.

“People have shared so many emotional stories, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.
