One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Between Creators and Parent Company

The recent announcement intensifies the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.

The co-founders maintain that the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company from "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity

The entrepreneur announced via an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name and potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”

The watermelon has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes

Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.

The new dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which originally established in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Shifts plus Future Plans

Mr. Cohen indicated how he will create other ice cream flavors that address concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, after decades of involvement, citing concerns that its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."

"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can actualise the social mission, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
