Educator Slain and 25 Girls Abducted in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers breached the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.
The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Witnesses reported a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to create fear.
Community members informed journalists that the armed men then led a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.
In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.
The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.
Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has intensified significantly in the last several months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the unrest.
