No professional sports organization markets parity in the manner of the NFL: it’s the entire brand. Yet following the first ten matchups in this campaign, this isn’t a league with perfect equilibrium among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. Rather, we see a situation where the bulk of franchises appear to be fine.

NFC Clarity

Looking at the NFC side, for the most part, the picture becomes more distinct. The Rams along with the Seahawks (each holding 7-2 records) seem like the most balanced franchises in football, and achieved blowout wins during Sunday's action. The Eagles with six wins even with their challenges maintain a deeply skilled squad across the NFL, likewise with Green Bay (five wins, two losses, one tie). The Lions also (six and three), with their fluctuating form along both lines of scrimmage and navigating internal staff conflicts, have demonstrated they can hammer good teams. For all five, one can readily put together a Super Bowl path.

AFC Confusion

Over in the AFC, championship race is a jumbled mess. The four teams leading their divisions through ten weeks: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) and the Steelers (5-4). Read that again. Kansas City isn't there. No Bills inclusion. Not the Ravens or Bengals. Historically strong franchises, supported by elite NFL signal-callers, display either significant personnel gaps or are dealing with health issues.

Parity Mechanics

In some ways, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. But watching this season's top AFC teams in the American Football Conference continues to seem unusual. Components of every squad suggest title potential, but not in their entirety. Franchise Analysis

Colts Situation

Starting in Indianapolis, Daniel Jones hasn't yet achieved pumpkin status. Yet the past two games have been worrying. He has returned to giving away possessions and struggling against pressure. He suffered seven sacks against the Falcons in the weekend game, and experienced a five-minute stretch in which he threw an interception and coughed up the ball thrice. This is a week after he turned the ball over five times facing the Steelers.

The Colts attack thrived early in the season since Jones evaded the disaster plays. The running back and protection unit mean the Colts are capable of overcoming occasional setbacks, as they did in Berlin. But Jones returning to his old blunder-prone days would end championship hopes.

New England Analysis

New England appears relatively comparable. A year ago, they were league laughingstocks. Currently, they represent the league’s happiest surprise and the strongest squad in football following seven consecutive victories. Had it not been for losing due to fumbles a manageable matchup facing Pittsburgh, they’d be sitting at 9–1 as the league's best. In the prior year, they seemed veteran and plodding. Currently they're young, fast and unafraid. However, we must acknowledge how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They've encountered the most manageable schedule across the NFL, yet vulnerabilities remain. Their quarterback has taken sacks thirty-five times – the second-most in football – and some of the shots he absorbed on Sunday proved brutal. With continued play, those beatings accumulate.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos are also 8-2, and it still feels like they're nervously waiting. Their quarterback has been erratic, with the attack struggling, as the defense handles most of the responsibility. Lacking competent QB performance, Denver cannot intimidate anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also contending within their division holding a 7-2 record, however, health issues along their offensive line will create difficulties to mount a deep postseason tilt.

Steelers Examination

And then there’s Pittsburgh, inexplicably frontrunning their division even after suffering 25-10 by the Chargers in the evening game. They have a negative point differential, their defensive unit frequently falters, and the QB's current constraints at this stage of his career regularly manifest. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, however, the Ravens, with Lamar Jackson healthy again and the schedule softening, are on a three-game win streak. We shouldn't be completely astonished that the Ravens have narrowed within a game of the Steelers, but that it has arrived so quickly is an indictment of Pittsburgh’s inconsistencies. Considering the Ravens opened with a 1-5 record and still look like likely to claim the title reveals much about the entire AFC.

Established Contenders

The Ravens represent a segment among three elite teams – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, that would continue to generate the most fear for opponents should they reach postseason. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, yet Kansas City and Buffalo cannot get out of their own way.

Bills Struggles

Previously, the Bills were riding high following victory over Kansas City. On Sunday they suffered one of the most disappointing losses of the season. They didn’t just lose against Miami; they looked terrible, falling 30-13 on the road. This represented Miami's initial victory over the Bills in more than 1,000 days.
