The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
