Los Angeles Battles Unprecedented Heat Just One Week After Severe Winter Storm.
In the wake of significant rainfall that caused flooding across areas in the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with abnormally high temperatures for the end of February.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
By Friday afternoon, the temperature reached 91°F (33°C) in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by weather officials. This exceeds the previous daily record for February 27th, which was 88°F (31°C) and was established in the previous year.
"Very warm conditions" were labeled on forecast graphics for the region.
Safety Advisories
The weather service issued a warning that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice featured:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Not leaving children or pets unattended in a car.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sharp rise in mercury follows closely after a powerful winter storm that struck the region last week. That storm delivered heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to the mountains, causing evacuation orders for countless residents.
Sadly, the storm also caused a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Temperatures Easing
Looking ahead cooler conditions is expected. Temperatures were expected to fall to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in central Los Angeles by overnight.
Several cities that hit the 90-degree mark included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were expected to see the upper eighties.
For the weekend, downtown LA can see readings in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the week ahead.
