Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
