The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An recent term emerged a few months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by medical experts like child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for physicians to treat a young patient who has lost their complete family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that atrocities are ongoing. Officials rejects these allegations, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is accused of. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. An institution that was originally built on harmony has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
