The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island located within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is developed, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
