The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
